16 - 2 tbsp olive oil

→ To Finish

# How-to:

01 - Warm the olive oil in a large deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
02 - Add the chopped onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until translucent. Stir in garlic, red bell pepper, and sliced chili if using, cooking for an additional 2 minutes.
03 - Incorporate the chicken pieces and sauté until lightly browned on all sides, about 3 to 4 minutes.
04 - Mix in the tomato paste, smoked paprika, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1 minute until aromatic.
05 - Pour in crushed tomatoes and chicken broth, then bring the mixture to a boil.
06 - Stir in the dried pasta and season generously with salt. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover partially, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
07 - Add the shrimp, stir, and cook uncovered for 5 to 7 minutes until pasta is al dente and shrimp are opaque and cooked through. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
08 - Remove from heat and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until incorporated.
09 - Plate immediately, garnished with fresh basil leaves and lemon wedges.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • One pot means you're done with cleanup before dessert even enters the conversation.
  • The shrimp cooks so quickly that you don't have that anxious moment wondering if it's overdone.
  • That perfect balance of heat and acidity hits differently when chicken and seafood dance together in the same sauce.
02 -
  • Don't skip browning the chicken—that's where the deeper flavor lives, and it takes less than five minutes.
  • If your pasta seems too dry when the shrimp goes in, add a splash more broth; pasta will continue absorbing liquid as it finishes cooking.
  • The shrimp truly cooks in minutes, so keep a close eye once they hit the pot or they'll go from tender to rubbery before you realize it.
03 -
  • Keep your broth warm in a separate pot if you can—adding cold liquid to a rolling simmer can disrupt the cooking process and take longer to reach the right texture.
  • Fresh basil added at the very end tastes completely different from basil that's been cooking in the pot for ten minutes; don't underestimate this final garnish.
